Andrew Ford raises over £500 for The Movement Centre

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Andrew Ford ran the London Marathon on April 17th to raise money for The Movement Centre. As Andrew is ‘not a runner’ as he puts it, he did exceptionally well and completed the marathon in 4hours, 42 minutes which is a brilliant time. He raised in excess of £500 for The Movement Centre, which is a fabulous achievement and will be a huge help to the work of the centre.

Andrew thoroughly enjoyed the day and it had an amazing atmosphere. He also said that the event itself was extremely well organised. Andrew is having a break now and then it’s time to start training for next year!

Thank you Andrew from all of us at The Movement Centre.

Dr Penny Butler Elected Fellow of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

We are proud to report that the Director of The Movement Centre, Penny Butler, has been awarded a Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. This is only awarded as a result of nominations from peers, it is not something that can be applied for. The citation from the Society reads:

A Fellowship is awarded to Dr Penelope Barbara Butler for her contribution to Paediatric physiotherapy and in particular the management of children with cerebral palsy.

Dr Butler began her career as a physiotherapist in 1970 as a student of the Royal London Hospital School of Physiotherapy. On qualification, she soon began gaining experience in neurological physiotherapy, initially in spinal cord injuries but rapidly gaining experience in the management of cerebral palsy. In 1979, she was awarded an MSc in Rehabilitation studies and in 1993 a PhD entitled “The Physiotherapy Management of motor impairment”. Her career since 1978 has unusually been devoted to both clinical practice and research. Her research has led to 32 publications in peer reviewed journals, 3 book chapters, and a number of published abstracts in conference proceedings.

Her research and clinical experience over the last 20 years led to the research based development of Targeted Training (TT), a unique and successful treatment strategy for children with movement and postural difficulties. During the same period of time Dr Butler, together with Biomechanical Engineer Richard Major, developed patented equipment to implement TT. The results of her research include significant improvements in head control, sitting, crawling, kneeling and standing/walking skills of children with poor motor control. In 1996, with a small group of supporters, Dr Butler established the Movement Foundation. This is a registered charity which provides treatment for children with movement difficulties (predominantly cerebral palsy) within an established movement centre. Dr Butler established the charity to enable children without funding to receive treatment. She has treated hundreds of children and helped to improve quality of life for both children and their families. Dr Butler has lectured in many parts of the world and she continues to collaborate in research projects in the UK, as well as abroad, while also maintaining a full clinical caseload. Her Targeted treatment approach is described by her nominators as being “totally unique and innovative.”
