Your course of Targeted Training

Starting a course of therapy
All of our therapy sessions take place at which will at our dedicated centre in Oswestry, Shropshire. At our first meeting we will establish if your child could benefit for a course of Targeted Training. This appointment usually takes 2-3 hours. If your child is suitable our engineer will also measure them for their standing frame. You can then decide if you would like to go ahead.

Finally, we will need to ensure that the funding is in place. Our team is on hand to help discuss this and talk through all the available options. For more information on funding please see here.

What to expect from a course of Targeted Training

When everything is in place you will be ready to start Targeted Training. At your child’s second appointment  you will be supplied with a specialist standing frame, that has been build to your child’s measurements.

At the start of a child’s course functional goals are set.  These may be head control, independent sitting balance, standing or walking. Each is defendant on the child’s particular needs.

Targeted Training is specific and accurate and you will be given guidance and support to practise the therapy at home.  We ask families to commit to half an hour a day, as continuity is important. This should not be too hard to fit into the daily routine.

This repeated therapy each day allows your child to learn to control their own movements and means that Targeted Training, unlike other therapies, can be delivered in the absence of a trained professional. Each family has a dedicated specialist physiotherapist from The Movement Centre throughout the course of therapy, who is on hand with support and advice.

Around every 8 weeks we have a scheduled appointment with you, lasting 2-3 hours, where you will come to The Movement Centre. During these appointments the support on the standing frame may be altered depending on the child’s progress; this will allow them to gradually progress control in a ‘head to toe’ direction; in the same way that control develops in an infant.

Each course is unique and takes place over 9-12 months. You will be invited to a review session 6 months afterwards the course is completed. We will work with you to ensure your child can make the best progress possible.

Can Targeted Training work alongside Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy?

We can work with children who are suitable for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), both pre and post-operation. Pre-operative Targeted Training can help child to gain as much trunk control as possible prior to the operation so that they can take maximum advantage of the benefits of SDR. Post-operative Targeted Training can help give a focused daily therapy to ensure they achieve improved strength and control.
